Genetic testing after referral to a geneticist
Do you or your child’s pediatric oncologist have questions about heredity? That may be a reason to carry out genetic testing.
Your doctor will refer you to a geneticist (clinical geneticist) if:
your child has a type of cancer in which hereditary factors often play a role
your child has other health problems besides cancer
there are diseases in your family that may suggest a hereditary predisposition
Your doctor may also refer you if you have many questions about heredity.
The geneticist will work with you to find out whether your child has a hereditary predisposition. They will ask about cancer or other diseases in your family and about your child’s development. The geneticist will explain whether DNA testing is useful and, if so, what kind of test it involves. They will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of testing and support you in making your decision.
